Melbourne’s idyllic hotel scene just got a whole lot better. Introducing Shadow Play by Peppers – a hotel in a class of its own. Shadow Play by Peppers is where chic meets contemporary with inspirational design and service to match. With a stone throw away from the central business district, the hotel is smack in the middle of all the action in Melbourne.

An elegant urban retreat in the heart of Melbourne, Shadow Play by Peppers offers everything that the new-age business traveller would aspire. A heated rooftop pool with full barbeque facilities, a locally inspired wine-bar along with the convenience of valet parking and 24 hour reception.

Located at the juncture of Clarendon Street and City Road, Shadow Play by Peppers is smack in the middle of all the action. It’s a 300m walk from the Crown entertainment precinct, 650m walk from Melbourne Convention Centre and 300m walk from the Southbank promenade.

A taxi ride from Melbourne  airport costs approx A$65.00- A$70.00 depending on the time of the day. Shadow Play by Peppers also offers transfers to and from Melbourne airport.

The entrance to the hotel can be slightly confusing as there are entrances to the building from both streets. However, the shortest way to reception is to take the City Road entrance. Climbing a short flight of stairs you’re met by a pleasant concierge team who take care of valet parking and baggage as fulfill check-in requirements. Attentive and professional staff ensure a quick check-in and give a full run-down of the building, it’s security features.

After check-in you can either take the elevator to the room or enjoy a relaxing drink at Edwin’s Wine Bar.

Shadow Play by Peppers boasts of quality accommodation comprising serviced apartments and penthouses. There is a variety on offer and they range from one and two bedroom apartments and three bedroom penthouse.

My choice was the two bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment that was situated on the ninth floor with a balcony and sprawling views to the bustling city. The spacious apartment came with a separate lounge and dining area. I was entertaining guests in the apartment and so this was the ideal category for having the flexibility of a good-size room for comfort of my guests.

A fully stocked up mini-bar with international and local beverages is ready at your disposal.

And so is an espresso maker for that early morning coffee fix.

The very plush and luxurious Bed is super comfortable and the crisp cotton linen is as inviting as it can get after a long days work.

The beds are turned down every evening with a personal touch.

The suite has two 39 inch television in the lounge with major international and domestic channels and also features the room service and restaurant menus adding to the convenience.

The apartment has all the amenities that you’d expect of a five star hotel. Cotton bathrobes along with a steam iron and ironing board are tucked away for your convenience in the wardrobe.

The bathroom is spacious with a three way shower and bright, soft lighting.

Luxury toiletries from Applesby are available for use.

The vanity is cleverly conceived and maximises the space. Well thought of and with everything in reach as you’d expect it to be.

A selection of fine wines, spirits are available for your comfort to select from the pantry area.

The kitchenette features a gas cooking hob offering speedy cooking if you need to in the apartment.

The apartment comes ready with a washer and dryer and is cleverly conceived in the panels of the lounge area.

A full range of crockery is available.

And a wall mounted oven too if you’re in the mood of a roast.

There isn’t a dedicated travel desk in the apartment but the apartment lounge has a large dining table that would suffice if you’re keen to catch up on work.

The Wifi at the apartment was a decent 30Mbps download and 28 Mbps upload speed.

There is a Voip phone with international and local calling.

Shared working areas at the hotel are inviting too. The library offers comfortable lounge for some quality downtime on level 9.

If you’re looking for a meeting space, a brand new sophisticated conference venue on level 46 offers sweeping views of the bayside with floor to ceiling windows.

On the ground floor of Shadow Play by Peppers, Edwin Wine Bar and Cellar. Edwin Wine Bar and Cellar prides in offering guests food and wine that’s sourced only from the Victorian region.

Offering diversity and depth of the region, Edwin Wine Bar and Cellar brings to its guests a true style and approach of wine making that is unique to the state of Victoria. Taking it one step further to highlight the significant impact women in the local wine industry have, with an almost 50/50 balance of male and female winemakers represented on the wine list.

The kitchen brigade is helmed by talented head chef Ritesh Patil. Edwin’s kitchen offers contemporary Australian cuisine with a focus on local producers.

The menu is versatile and focussed on shared plates. Ritesh presents classic dishes like the tartare of Victorian beef and elevates it to another level in its presentation and taste.

Another must try is the Eclair, liver pate, pickle and hazelnut.

Hagen’s organics beef was the most perfectly cooked and rested steak that was tender and juicy and a perfect accomplishment with our Victorian Shiraz.

And we finished off dinner with a helping of the Four Pillars Shiraz Gin from the Yarra Valley which arguably is the best gin in the world.

Breakfast is served at Edwin’s daily and again the spread is impressive.

Homemade beans freshly brewed in aromatic tomato concasse complemented with mushrooms is just the start.

Scrambled eggs and moist bacon. Eggs can also be made to order.

The continental spread is impressive too with a good selection of breads and danishes.

And freshly squeezed juices.

Shadow Play by Peppers is set to turn heads with it’s character and the hospitality it offers. In a dense hotel landscape – Shadow Play by Peppers is a pleasant breakaway from the obvious and paints an original picture of how they want their guests to feel and interact with the property. Its pledge to the state of Victoria is a true highlight and will continue to grow as the hotel progressively showcases the enormous riches in produce, seafood and meats and to match with the wine. A top stay.
