Virgin Australia is turning up the heat in the battle for the Tasman, announcing over 40,000 extra seats on their services between Australia and New Zealand including new routes from Melbourne to Queenstown, and Sydney to Wellington, launching from yesterday.

Auckland to Newcastle has been launched, Virgin Australia will be the only airline to offer Business Class on the Melbourne to Queenstown route, as well as the only airline to offer WiFi across their entire Tasman fleet.

In addition to this increased capacity, every Virgin Australia fare between Australia and New Zealand now includes a meal, drink, up to 23kg of checked baggage, and access to inflight WiFi.

Virgin Australia Airlines Group Executive, Rob Sharp, says that the airline is looking forward to expanding their presence in the New Zealand market, and improving the experience for all travellers.

The Sydney to Wellington return service will operate five times per week, with the Melbourne to Queenstown return services operating three times per week from tomorrow. Seasonal services between Auckland and Newcastle have commenced, with three return flights per week.

In addition to these new services, the airline has increased capacity on several of its key routes between Australia and Auckland. As Virgin Australia improves their offering for guests across the Tasman, the airline has also recently announced the launch of a new international lounge network in Australia and New Zealand.

The new international lounges in New Zealand will be in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. Eligible guests flying from Queenstown and Christchurch will be able to use the Manaia Lounge, and guests flying from Auckland to Australia and the Pacific Islands can visit the award-winning Strata Lounge. These lounges will give guests access to a range of dining options, a self-service bar and high-speed WiFi, with a Virgin Australia lounge opening in Wellington in the next few months.
